It's about time I started blogging ...

... and going abroad is the perfect reason!

For the next 3 months I will be working at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in downtown Johannesburg with another intern from York. Why Johannesburg you may ask? Well, I love working with children and this was the perfect opportunity to apply some of the knowledge and skills I have gained from being a science student as well as apply my previous work experiences. Also, being a big soccer fan, going to Johannesburg means a lot to me since last year's FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa. Hopefully I will get the opportunity to visit Soccer City and snap some photos where some of my favourite teams played and perhaps steal a few blades of grass!

Although most people doing internships through York during the months to come are looking forward to hot summer days, those of us doing a bit further south are going to have an extra long winter this year. Although I doubt the South African winters are anywhere as harsh as the winters we experience in Canada, and we don't always get great summer weather in Toronto, I will still miss the few hot days when you can stroll down harbourfront, go to Centre Island, or just explore downtown Toronto. After my time in Joburg I have been presented with the opportunity to visit my family in Europe so I will be able to retire my winter clothes for at least a month. I don't know how I will be able to fit 2 seasons worth of clothes and other necessities for about 4 months in 1 suitcase, but I guess I'll have to get creative.

The last couple of weeks have been pretty crazy trying to get everything done for this trip and saying my goodbyes, but with less than a week left it's time to wrap things up. We are leaving on May 4th and we have an 8 hour flight to Europe, plus a 3 hour layover in Amsterdam, after which we will be faced with another 11 hours down to South Africa to reach our destination. I am extremely excited to learn more about a new culture and a different way of life, meet new people, and I am looking forward to sharing some of my most memorable experiences with everyone who visits my blog :) I wish all the interns a safe trip, and an amazing summer filled with unforgettable moments!
